FIVE U.S. BOMBERS

Forced Landing in Turkey AFTER RAID ON ODESSA LONDON, June 13. Reuter’s Ankara correspondent says: It is believed that United States bombers attacked Odessa, Nikolaev, arid points in Rumania. It is reported that the bombers were ones based in Egypt. Three bombers made forced landings, though without suffering damage, on an aerodrome at Ankara in Turkey. Another bomber made a forced landing in the Smyrna district of Turkey. The members of the crew refused to give any details of the operation. They merely said it was a Black Sea mission.

Turkey, in compliance with international law, will offer parole to the officers and will intern the other members of the crew.

All of the planes are four-engined Douglas bombers. It is also reported from Vichy that a fifth United States bomber has landed in Turkey. It is reported that these planes, after fulfilling a mission in the Balkans, tried to reach Sebastopol, but the Luftwaffe forced them to turn back. The bombers ran out of petrol when over Anatolia, in Turkey.
