YOUTH DROWNED

In Grey River

BODY RECOVERED YESTERDAY. A youth, aged about 16 years, James Furness, of Blake Street, Blaketown, was swept away and drowned in the Grey River near McLean’s Park aoout 3.25 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, when he was attempting to retrieve a football. Tne body was recovered at 4 p.m. yesterday, near the mouth of the river, day, aoout 100 yds irbm where the accident occurred.

In the company of several other youths, Furness was playing footuail on McLean Park, when, the ball was kicked- over tne fence and bounced into the river. Furness went alter tne ball but slipped on the rocks and fell into the water.

A search party consisting of Constables Murray, jtennie, and Scanlon, and Mesrrs J. \Valton and W. Anderson. Haroour Board officials, carried out dragging operations in the river on Saturday and yesterday and their efforts met with success at 4 o’clock yesterday when the body was discovered by Constable Scanlon, who was accompanied by Mr. Walton. Deceased is survived by his parents Mr: and Mrs. George Furness, three sisters Mesdames A. Spivey (Blaketown), H. Robinson (Greymouth), and Miss Joan Furness (Blaketown), four brothers, Clarence (servoner of war in Italy), Herbert( serving in military camp), Kenneth and Anthony (Blaketown). The funerai will take place to-morrow.
