U.S.A. PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM. SHORTAGE OF FINANCE AND OF TEACHERS. WASHINGTON, June' 3. Mr. John Studebaker E,ducation Commissioner, testifying before ithe House of Representatives Appropriations Committee, declared that the public school system was in grave danger of collapse, because of the tremendous financial and personnel demands of the war effort. The difficulties he enumerated were, firstly, a reduction on the Sate side of financial support to public education; secondly, many qualified teachers have enlisted in the Army; thirdly, the withdrawal of many teachers because of the magnet of higher salaries in war industries.
