FERRIES COLLIDE

IN AUCKLAND HARBOUR AUCKLAND, 'J'une 3. In thick fog, two ferry steamers collided near the Queen’s Wharf, shortly before 9 o’clock this morning. There was no panic aboard the steamers, and no one was injured. Sirens had been sounding on the harbour since long before daylight. The steamer Takapuna left ißavswater with a large number of passengers, and nothing was sighted until a crane near the end of Queen’s Wharf, on the city side of the harbcu:.’, loomed up. While the Takapuna was manoeuvring to come to her berth, the ferry steamer Pupuke outward bound from the city, was seen moving straight towards her. The Takapuna immediately went into reverse, but a collision was unavoidable. In a glancing blow the Pupuke was considerably damaged between the lower and upper decks, and she will be laid up for two or three days. The Takapuna was slightly damaged on the bulwarks and railings, but was not put out of commission.
