JAPS. IN CHINA Chinese Move Against Nanking LONDON, 'June 1. Thh Tokio radio states the Japanese army in South China has begun an offensive in Kwaintuhg Province, after the arrival of crack Japanese reinforcement units. The Chinese High Command announced that heavy fighting is in progress in the Kwantung Province. A new Japanese advance in Chekaing Province has 'been offset by the Chinese recapture of Changshien and Changlochen. The Chinese acknowledge the loss of -Showchang, 30 miles north-west, of Kinwha.
I A new landing has been made in the island of Chaun-shih by . the Japanese, according to a Chungking communique. Three Japanese warships provided a barrage for the landing.
The Chinese launched an offensive against the Japanese 200 miles from Nanking, the seat of the puppet government, and have occupied Anking, oh the Yangtse ’river, and another town of importance. They are occupying strategic points -in each town and are storming the city walls. In the south-west, the Chinese are fighting on the outskirts of 'Lungling. Japanese reinforcements, attempting to reach Lunling from Wanting, on the frontier, Were intercepted. Two hundred casualties .were inflicted. The Chinese repulsed repeated Japanese attacks in the Tenchung sector,.-.60 .miles north of the Thailand frontier, between the Mekong and Salween/rivers.
Tokio message states that Lieu-tenant-General Takeo Yasuda has been appointed First Commander of the Army Air Force.
