Rabaul and New Guiinea (Rec. 1.30). MELBOURNE, June 2. - Allied night attacks on Japanese bases are continuing. To-day’s communique says:— ' Rabaul: —Our Air Force executed a night bombing strafing attack over ’the dock! area.. Lae and Salamaua:—Just before dawn our Air Force attacked/ the building area of Lae and the runway in Salamaua. Results were not observed at Lae. Direct hits on the Salamaua runway caused a large explosion. “Nearly all of our planes have returned from these operations.”

TRIBUTE TO AUSTRALIANS.

SYDNEY, June 1.

Lieutenant-General George Brett (Commander of the Allied Air Forces in Australia), interviewed at an undisclosed operational base, said that Australian squadrons were being trained in U.S.A, machines so that they coud! take their places in the first line of battle.

Paying a tribute to the men, who will soon be engaged in actual operations against the enemy, General Brett said: “Those lads are doing a fine job. They are the heart of the whole show.” He expressed confidence in the ultimate outcome of the war over New Guinea, and pointed out that the Allies were still maintaining a three-to-one advantage over the enemy in losess on the ground and in the air. “We shall continue to hammer the enemy wherever he has tried to establish himself,” he added.
