BLACKBALL NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). Misses B. MacGregor (Girls High School, Timaru), G. Gilmer (Training College, Christchurch) B. Kirk (Convent School, Greymouth), Master A. O’Donnell (St. Bede’s College, Christchurch), and Master Roger Fowler (St. Andrew’s College Christchurch) are spending the term holidays here with their relatives. Mrs. L. Kerr, Oaro, who has been on an extended holiday as the guest of her sister Mrs. G. Mountford has left on her return home. Mrs. Mountford accompanies her. Mrs. V. Emerson, Greymouth, who has been in Blackball as the guest of Mrs. E. Buchanan has returned homer. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Lewis and family have left here. Mr. Lewis is to go into camp, while Mrs. Lewis and family join her parents in the North Island.

Mrs. -Jennison, Christchurch, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs R. Clark. Mrs J. Pirrie, Twelve Mile, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs R. Clark, has returned home. Mrs. D. Nicol, Timaru, is visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs Brown.

Mrs. Mapleston, Palmerston North is the guest of Mr. and Mrs Jas. Turner. Kilgour Street.

Mr. Sam lAlward (Otago University) is spending holidays with his parents, Dr. and Mrs Aylward. Miss C. Campbell. Dominican College, Oamaru, is spending the term holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Campbell, Domonion Hotel. Mrs. M. McDougall, leaver, for Wellington this week to join her husband, who is now working there.

The following went into camp last week: Messrs S. McClure, S. Anderson, T. Philip and W. Moore.

The following were home at the week-end on leave: Privates G. Jamieson, J. McDonald. C. Buchanan. S. Lister, J. Ross, C. O’Flaherty. All left on return on Monday.

Miss Eva Leitch who spent a holiday with Mr. and Mrs. C. .White South Belt St., has left for Christchurch.

Miss I. Williams, who has been visiting Christchurch as the bridesmaid at the marriage of her friend. Miss G. Barry, Blackball, to Mr. E. Croft, Stillwater, has returned. < Mrs. M. Flynn, of Glenomaru, Otago, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Williams. , Mrs. Dumbleton has returned from a holiday visit to Christchurch. The grocery business in Hilton St., carried on successfully for many years, by Mr. L. Elsmore, has changed hands, having been purchased by Lowerv Bros. iPrior to leaving on transfer to Ohai State School, Mr. C. Mason, Headmaster of the Blackball State School was entertained by the League Football Club of which he had been an ardent supporter and by the School Committee at a social in the Oddfellows Hall. Mr. S. Lewis, of the teaching staff, who was going into camp was also a guest. Each guest was presented with an I envelope of notes by the Chairman lof the League Club, Mr. C. Mountl ford, who extended the very best wishes to the departing guests. He specially thanked Mr. Mason for the interest he had always manifested in the club and Mr. Lewis for his kindly interest. Mr. B. F. Connors added his good wishes. Mrs. F. Mason for the School Committee, presented Mr. Mason with a set of book ends, and Mr. Lewis with a camp outfit, extending to each the very best wishes. The reciepients suitably replied. Tea was served .and dancing continued into the small hours. Mr. and Mrs Brown gave a party recently at their home on 'the twenty-first birthday of their eldest daughter, Mrs. F. Garvice. A large company of relatives and friends gathered and a very enjoyable time was spent. Songs were given by many of the company while everybody was supposd to give an item, to the embarrassment of not a few. Supper was provided and the young lady’s health was proposed by her father and responded to by various speakers. Mgs Garvice was the recipient of many useful presents. Last Friday. Mr. H. Jones, of ' Unper Moonlight?, a veteran gold miner, was found in a state of collapse by Mr. J. Tilley, another digger, who was on his way out to

Atarau. The two men were in the habit of making the journey out in company. Mr. Tilley who lives further back in the hills, at Anderson’s Flat cabled .to bail the billy and wait on his friend. On entering the hut he found Mr. Jones lying on the floor, apiparently suffering from a stroke. He made the sufferer as comfortable as possible, and set out to summon Dr. Aylward of Blackball, who, accompanied by Constable

Walden, was soon on the scene, and after the man had had attention he was conveyed down the track, where the ambulance was waiting to carry him to the Grey Hospital. The suf- \ ferer is a well-known figure in the district, a ntaive of Brunnerton and district, a native of Brunnerton and will join in wishing for his recovery.
