MEN IN TRAINING
BOROUGH COUNCIL SUPPORTS RETURN TO INDUSTRY. The question of establishing a system of rotation .whereby jmen who had undergone a period of trailing in camp would replace men in industry, who would then be able to go into training, was discussed at last evening’s meetins of the Greymoutii Borough Council,, when Cr. H. Herring referred to the suggestion made to this effect by Mr. J. O’Brien, M.P., in the House of Representatives. He said that there were men in camn who were sulficient'.'y trained. They could be returned to industry, and, if this were done the value of their training would be more valuable than if they were concentrated into camps. The fighting forces would be more spread out. Moreover, New Zealand was short of essential foodstuffs owing to the influx of American soldiers He moved that the Council write to the Prime Minister mid the Minister of Manpower, asking that rotation of men in training •he put into operation at an early date The Mayor (Mr. F. A. Kitchingham): We are passing a vote of noconfidence in the Government. If we keep passing resolutions of this description—it is a question whether It comes within the jurisdiction oi the Council. We all want an all-in war effort but can we go on passing resolutions here, there and everywhere and bombarding the Government with them?
Cr. F. F. Boustridce considered that the matter should be left to the Government.
Cr. Herring replied, and the Council, on a show of hands, decided to support h’s motion.
