EIGHTY APPEALS

Against Overseas Service REVIEWED AT GREYMOUTH Eighty appeals against overseas service were reviewed at Greymouth yesterday by the Armed Forces Appeal Board (Messrs H. Lovell, chairman, A. J. Panther, G. Manson and the secretary, Mr C. F. Shapcott). Sine die adjournments were confirmed in the majority of the cases which were for men employed in farming and milling. The following appeals were adjourned sine die: — The Public Works Department appealed for Wilfred John Champion (launchman), Gerald Langford Symes (electrician), Robert P. Mar-tm-Levorson (linesmen). The Post and Telegraph Department, Greymouth, appealed for William Keith Faulkner (postmaster and wireless operator). The Railway Department appealed for Allen Thomas Hunt, Cec'i Edward Hamill, William Henry Edwards, Percy James Reid, Edward Henry J. Burgess . (porters), and Paul Murray (boilermaker). Runanga Co-op Society appealed for James Desmond Piner, apprentive baker. Evidence was given by T. Bowes (manager). Stuart and Party appealed for lan James Mallet, miner. Brunner Collieries Ltd. appealed for Edward Mansell Tarling, miner Union Steamship Coy. (Mr E. B. E. Taylor) appealed for Robert "William Bartley (wharf foreman). George Henry Dalzell (butcher(Mr E. B. E. Taylor) appealed on the grounds of public interest. An appeal by Sotheran's Ltd. for Thomas Walker, labourer, was withdrawn. An appeal by George L. .Burge’ 1 , storekeeper (Mr W. D. Taylor) was dismissed, but reservist is not to be called up for two months. Thomas Coll appealed for Peter Thomas Coll, power line constructor Appellant gave evidence in support of the appeal which was adjourned for two months for review. The Railway Department’s appeal for James Alexander Mitchell (station operator) was dismissed, service being postponed until July 31. FARMING APPEALS An appeal by P. Smith senr. for Preston Ralph Smith, farmer (Mr T. E. Coates) was reviewed, a sine die adjournment being confirmed. In an appeal for Wilford James Begg, farm hand, by W. T. Begg, a sine die adjournment was confirmed. C. Passmore (Mr W. D. Taylor), appealed for Passmore Stewart, farmer, who also lodged an appeal. Evidence was given by both appellants who conduct farms at Kumara and Hohonu. Sine die adjournments were confirmed. H. E. Hodgkinson appealed for Keith Maxwell Hodgkinson, dairy farmer (Mr A. M. Jamieson). The appeal was adjourned sine die, subject to recruit doing three months’ service in a Territorial camp during June, July and August. Mary T. Shaffrey appealed for John Kevin Shaffrey, farmer (Mr W. D. Taylor), the appeal being adjourned sine die. H. P. Bryan appealed for Townley Benbow Bryan (bee farmer). Evi. dence was given by appeallant and recruit. The appeal was dismissed, reservist not to be called up for two months. Michael Minehan (Mr J. W. Hannan) appealed for Michael John Minehan, farmer. Evidence was given by appellant. It was decided to adjourn the apepal for three months for review, and) in the meantime appellant is to make every endeavour to replace his son. John Graham appealed for John Percival Wright, farm labourer. The appeal was adjourned sine die, reservist to do Territorial service for three months up to September 1. Frederick Andrew O’Donnell, farmer (Mr C. R. McGinley) appealed on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. Evidence was given by appellant and John Joseph Shannahan. The appeal was adjourned for two months for review. Thomas R. Smithers appealed for Thomas William Smithers (farm manager). Appellant gave evidence as to strenuous work on the farm. The appeal was adjourned for three months for review. The Director of National Service at request of Mr A. H. Chunn (Mr C. R. McGinley) appealed for Ernest Sefton Topp, farm labourer. A. H. Chunn stated recruit was manager of his farm at Mawheraiti. The appeal was adjourned sine die. Ambrose Edmond Griffin, dairy farmer (Mr W. P. Taylor) appealed

on the grounds of public interest. In evidence appellant said he served the whole of Otira and Arthur’s Pass with milk. The appeal was adjourned sine die. Catherine Nicholas (Mr C. R. McGinley) appealed for Keith Morcane Wheeler, farm hand. Robert Thomson gave evidence as to conditions on the farm. The appeal was adjourned sine die. The Director of National Service on behalf of G. S. Jacobs (Mr E. B. E. Taylor) appealed for John Thomson Jacobs, farm hand. The appeal was adjourned sine die, recruit to do three months’ Territorial training. Riversdale Dairy Supplies Ltd. appealed for Arthur Joseph Carson, truck driver. Mrs Norton gave evidence and the appeal was adjourned sine die. Walter Shepherd (Mr E. 18. E. Taylor) appealed ,for his son, William Shepherd, farm labourer. Evidence was given by appellant and the board adjourned the appeal sine die.
