SIEGE OF MALTA

(Rec. 8.35) LONDON, May 20. Sir S. Cripps in the Commons, made reference to Malta. The quantity of bombs dropped on Malta in April was six thousand tons, he said. He did not think the House or the country realised the enormous degree of attack from which Malta had suffered, and the , enormous amount of aircraft Britain had to get to Malta to counter it. During April, the Germans made 5000 sorties, and more bombs were droppt d on the island during that period than on Britain during the worst period of the blitz.

Enemy Convoy Attacked

AIR ACTIVITY COUNTERED. (Rec. 12.0). RUGBY. May 20. A Malta communique, states: Fleet Air Arm aircraft successfully attacked an enemy convoy in the Mediterranean last night. Torpedo attacks were delivered at a merchantman and a destroyer. Both vessels were probably hit. A small formation of enemy bombers attacked an aerodrome at Malta at dusk this evening, and were engaged by anti-aircraft fire. Last night Italian bombers drdpped bombs without causing damage. One bomber was shot down in flames by a night fighter, piloted by ah officer who destroyed three Italian bombers last Saturday night. Enemy activity to-day was restricted mainly to fighter patrols and reconnafcahces. There has been no civilian damage in the last twenty-four hours. ■
