INVESTITURE BY KING (Rec. 12.0) RUGBY, May 20. His Majesty, at an investiture at Buckingham Palace recently decorated a Commando, Sergeant A. Herbert with the M.M. and D.C.M. Sergeant Herbert has been a member of the Commandos for two years. He won the D.C.M. during the Vaagso raid. Lance Corporal J. Hah, of an airborne unit, also received the D.C.M. The Military Decoration (an exclusively Army decoration) was given to an ordinary seaman in the Royal Navy. He won it when he was a Lance Corporal m the Argyll and Sutherland Hignlanders. A dozen heroes of underwater warfare against the Nazis received the D.S.M.. Decorations c the George Medal were also made

N.Z. PILOT’S FURTHER SUCCESS

8.0.W. RUGBY, May 20. An enemy aircraft shot down over Holland, last night, was destroyed single-handed by a twenty-foui-years-old New Zealand fighter pilot, Desmond Scott, of Ashburton. He has taken part in numerous n.ghi attacks on enemy aerodromes, and at the beginning of this month, was awarded the D.F.C. for “great skill and exceptional devotion.'* Thick haze made navigation diincu‘t, but Scott found the enemy aerodrome which .was the objective, circling it at a height of 1,000 feet. He circled over the aerodrome, and saw a twin-engined plane with navigation lights, preparing to land. Scott overshot at his first attempt. He lowered the landing flaps on his wings in order to reduce speed, ana when 600 vards behind the ' enemy machine, gave it three two-second bursts. Scott said: “Almost immediately. the interior of the enemy plane lit up with a pinkish glow. |The Hun pilot took rib evasive action, but crashed downward about a hundred vards from the flare path. He sc/-m--ed to overturn completely, and a few moments later, there was a tower of smoke.”
