A bucket of water was all that was required to quench an outbreak oi fire at the Recreation Hotel, Greymouth at 8.35 o’clock yesterday morning. The fire was discovered at the rear of the electric power switchboard, and although the Greymouth Fire Brigade promptly answered the alarm its services were unnecessary, the proprietor, Mr J. Walker, having extinguished the flames.

Presentations of a gold trefoil badge to Miss J. McNiven, who has retired from active Guiding after 16 years’ service, and a flower basket to Mrs S. F. White, who has been honorary secretary of the Association for 1.0 years, were made at a meeting of the Greymouth Girl Guides’ Association on Monday. During the evening the Divisional. Commissioner, Mrs Scha.ef, enrolled Mesdames Bunt, Parfitt, Greenslade and Page as members of the Association.

Mr. F. A. Kitchingham was elected Chairman of the Westland Provincial Patriotic Council at the monthly meeting last evening. Mr. Kitchingham paid a tribute to the late Chairman (Mr. G. A. Perry), referring to the manper in which he had built up the Patriotic Fund with a view to future needs. Mr. P. J. McLean referred to Mr. Perry’s services for the Habour Board. Mr. A. R. Elcock. who succeeded Mr. Perry as Mayor of Hokitika, was elected DeputyChairman of the Council.

The Soldiers’ Shop Committee will welcome donations from all citizens to-morrow (Friday). Funds to be for parcels for our boys who are prisoners of war.—Advt.

Although a search 'was made for more than half an hour on Monday evening for Francis Patrick Stuart who fell overboard from an interIsland steamer between Lyttelton and Wellington, no trace was found of the body. A statement was given by Percival David Scrimgeour, an eye-witness, who said that at 10.20 p.m. he went on deck to inspect his car, and saw a party of Air Force men, soldiers and civilians singing, to the accompaniment of a pianoaccordeon. Stuart was dancing. About 11.15 o’clock a roll of the ship sent Stuart towards the rail, and aftei’ coming to rest there for a few moments he toppled over the side of the ship. Mr Scrimgeour made an unsuccessful, attempt to save Stuart and then called some of the ship’s officers. A life-belt with a Verey light attached, was thrown over the side, and the • ship circled around for more than half an hour. There was no sign of Stuart.
