RUGBY FOOTBALL
SEASON OPENS TO-DAY. The West Coast Rugby season will open to-day. In spite of the loss ox players owing to the war, there will ce some strong teams taking part, and as the season will bo a better one than might have been anticipated. The appearance of the Army team in the competition will arouse a good deal ox interest. The team has secured some good players from the various Clubs, and is reported to be a strong one. It will meet Celtic at Park No. 1, and the game should be a well-fought one, as Celtic have not lost many players, and have been doing some solid training. The Amalgamated team formed by the Star and United Clubs (last year’s winner), is likely to prove a good combination. They will play Cobden, last year’s runner-up, at Park No. 2. Cobden will provide good opposition with a team led by exAll Black Ron King. Blaketown’s rq-'entry into the competition will also be watched with interest. They will meet a strong Westland team at Hokitika.
The curtain-raiser to the Army v. Celtic game at |Park No. 1 will be the third grade Star v. Celtic, and that for the Star-United v. Cobden game at Park No. 2 will be the fourth grade, Blaketown v. Technical B.
