NEW PRICES

FOR CONSUMERS Statement by Tribunal PA WELLINGTON, May 1. The Price Tribunal to-night issued a statement regarding the operative incidence of the new taxation, in relation to the purchasing public. The Tribunal stated that m respect of the sales of taxable goods importei direct by retailers, and cleared through the Customs on or before Avril 30th.; and in respect of the sales of taxable goods, and any other goods referred to in the new taxation adjustment, bought from registered wholesalers, and invoiced on ox before April 30th., the highest taxation cost would, not be incurred bj the retailer. • ~ On this account, the Tribunal added, the retailers would not be permitted to increase their prices in :?e--spect of any goods so purchased on oi' before April 30th. i As to the manufacturers and wholesalers, who found’ themselves subjected to higher costs as the result of the new taxation, they would need to make direct application to the Tribunal for a price adjustment. This was necessary, because a large range of commodities were sold at consumer prices nominated by the manufacturers or by agents, and these were approved by the Tribunal; and, in respect of these “tariff lines, discussions as to the new consumer prices would take place between the Tribunal and the manufacturers and the agents. Inevitably, anomalies arose from any arbitrary revision of the price structure as the result of duty variations, and these would be rectified in the best interests of ■ all concerned, when the applications came to hand.

The Tribunal added that any suggested price increases by the brewers would need to be investigated by the Tribunal.
