[To the Editor] Sir, —Owing to the conservation of manpower*' a position will be vacant at a railway station. No applications, J understand, have been called —an unusual procedure surely- for a Government position—but two applications were put in, the successful applicant being the wife of a man well circv,instanced; and the other (whose husband, a soldier, is serving. his country) being registered to be called at any time to take an essential job.
