A CHALLENGE

To Curtin Government ON SENDING FORCES OVERSEAS. (Rec. 11.10). CANBERRA, April 30. A Federal political crisis was precipitated to-day. This was when, the Opposition Parties held a' joint meeting and reached a decision to challenge the Government on the Mr. Fadden, Opposition Leader, it troops, both volunteers and militia, overseas. This decision came as a surprise. It was reached after a long and heated discussion. Mr. Fadden, Opposition Leader, is is understood, strongly, opposed the move. It is believed that the move to oppose the Government is sponsored by Mr. R. G. Menzies and his supMinister, Mr. J. Curtin, declared that he would accept the challenge, and treat it as vital. RAID ON MORESBY. MELBOURNE, April 30. The United States spokesman at headquarters said the Japanese adopted new tactics in the raid on Port Moresby, by concentrating on one objective —an aerodrome. in previous raids, the Japanese showered bombs on a number of targets. Mr. Curtin in thp House oi Representatives, said Japanese air losses in the lighting over Northern Australia and the adjacent islands totalled more than 130 bombers. More than 100 others were damaged. ; SYDNEY, April 30. A relaxation of the brown-out strictions began in the metropolitan area last night, when lighting on trams and buses was sufficiently restored to enable passengers to read. Street lighting will also be increased. The Minister for Transport (Mr. Sullivan) stated that night road accident figures made it obvious that there should be some lifting of the brown-out. . The “Telegraph’s” Canberra correspondent says: General Blarney is preparing a report on the extent; to which the brown-out can be safely relaxed.
