HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, April 27. A young man was arrested in Hokitika the other evening, and was held in custody pending the arrival of a mDitaiv guard from a military camp. On Wednesday the Manpower Board will hold a session at the Countv Chambers while there will also be a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, there being a considerable number of cases, i At the meeting of the Borougu Council this evening. Mr. A. R. Elcock was sworn in as Mayor, having been erected unopposed in succession of the late Mr. G. A. Perry. The Council has now two vacancies to fill. The new Mayor has been the recipient of a numerous congratulations on his election. In practice as a barrister and solicitor, he has been Deputy Mayor, ana also chairman of the Finance Committee of the Council, and he is also Chairman of the Fire Board and of the Patriotic Committee, and Borough representative on the Provincial Committee, as well as a member of the Hospital Board. The death of a well-known resident of the district, Mr. Daniel Ryan, occurred this morning. A native of Kumara, he was 53 years of age, and for a number of years, before coming here two years ago to res’de, he was the proprietor of 'the All Nations Hotel at Rimu. He had been a'ling for some time, and recently’ underwent an operation at the Westland Hospital. Besides his wife he leaves a family of three, one daughter, Miss Mary Ryan, and two sons, John and Daniel, of Hokitika. He is also survived by two sisters. Mesdames Haines (Kumara) and Curran (Dannevirke), and by one brother, Robert, of Reefton. The funeral takes place on Wednesday morning. Brigadier General Puttick was a visitor to Hokitika on Anzac Day, and had a tall- with the Home Guard, and the Women’s Auxiliary prior to the parade. He left later for Christchurch. Captain Curtis and Major Jukes, of Nelson, were also in Hokitika on Anzac Day.

The Jubilee Tennis Club conducted the patriotic shop on Friday and netted £l4 10s.

The opening foursome at Hokitika golf links was won by Miss E. Dale and Mrs. Muirhead. An election is to be held on May 23, if necessary, to elect two members to the Borough Council, the vacancies being caused by the election of Cr. Elcock as Mayor, and the resignation of Cr. J. Fox, who, is now residing in Christchurch. At the meeting of St. Mary’s Club last evening the members extended a welcome to Rev. Father Cahill, who during the evening gave instructive criticism for the l benefit of the speakers. The programme for next meeting on May 3rd. will be prepared speeches, those taking part including Messrs P. .Quinn, L. Wilson, S. Davern and D. Nutting. There will also be a billiard tournament on this occasion.
