CEYLON PREPARED
FOR JAPANESE ATTACK. CAPITAL NOT DISSIPATED. (Rec. 7.15). COLOMBO, March 16. Ceylon is now “defence-minded.” There is no comparison between Colombo, which to-dav is a city without any frivolities, and Singapore and Hong Kong before they fell, regarding the persistence of the social round. ■ Hotels in Colombo are no longer centres of revelry. Dances have ceased. Most of the sports grounds have been adapted for war service. Racing is restricted. Defence preparations in Cevlon have progressively been intensified as Jaoan has moved, westwards. Sizeable reinforcements from all of the services have arrived since Ceylon came under the Indian Command in November. Troops are being trained for tropical warfare. Civil defence measures are being improved. The Ceylon public are generally calm, but they are not. complacent.
