WATERFRONT COMMISSION IN

GREYMOUTH.

Representatives of the Waterfront Control Commission, Messrs J. Roberts and Bockett, are at present in. Greymouth to discuss with all the parties concerned the question of the shipment of coal and limber with a view to securing a quicker turnround of vessels trading with -Greymouth. Yesterday many- matters were given lengthy consideration at a conference attended by the representatives of the Commission and shipping interests, the Railways Department (Mr J. Saw'ers, assistantN.Z. General Manager), being present, coal mining companies, and sawmilling interests. As a resuit the parties agreed on a policy of complete co-operation in connection with the work of loading vessels with coal and timber at the port. After the conference, Mr Roberts stated that there was a great demand for coal and timber in the North Island, and, as the West Coast produced these two commodities it was essential for the economic welfare of New Zealand that the best possible arrangements be made at Greymouth for shipping them to the North Island. He added that after a lengthy discussion, the parties had unanimously agreed on proposals which would in the future facilitate the despatch of vessels from Greymouth, and ensure the quick delivery of .the coal and timber produced on the West Coast to the North Island, where they were, urgently required. The conference concluded yesterday afternoon, but there will*be ,a meaning this morning to discuss the question of labour for waterfront work in Greymouth.
