AUSTRIAN COUPLE
' SUICIDE IN BRAZIL. (Received February 24, 10.20 p.m.). RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 23. The author, Stefan Zweig,’and his wife, committed suicide at their home jn Petropolis. Zweig left a letter ©f explanation of a suicide pact by himseif and his wife. He wrote: “Before departing life, I want to thank this marvellous country, Brazil, which so hospitably received me. After I saw mv country fall, my spiritual land, Europe, was destroying itself; and. as I reacn the age of sixty, it would require immense strength to reconstruct mv fife, and my energy has been ex-. nausted bv long years of peregrination as one without a country. Therefore. I believe it is time to end a life that was dedicated only to spiritual work, considering human liberty and my own as the greatest wealth in the world.”
Zweig and his wife took poison, r hey died in each other’s arms. President Vargas, of Brazil, visited the scene. He ordered that the buriM expenses b e paid by the Government.
