STOCKTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). Mr. C. Schadick, County Engineer, addressed a meeting of the Stockton E.P.S'. in the Stockton Hall, Mr. F. Connew presiding, and pointed out that it was essential to prepare protection for the residents at the earlist possible moment. Any woman who joined the E.P.S. would obtain compensation should she meet with disability while performing work in connection with the organisation. Mr. Schadick detailed various types of protective works to be constructed., also ways to deal with different types of bombs, and promised that a demonstration will be given to the country districts in the very near future. At the conclusion of Mr. Schadick's address, many questions were asked and satisfactorily answered by the speakers. Mr. Schadick paid a' later visit and, in company with the local members of the E.P.S., surveyed the most likely spots to be used as air raid shelters. It was finally decided to proceed at once with the work decided on. A meeting was held in Stockton on Wednesday to form a women’s branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. Seventeen members joined the Branch, which is very encouraging. A meeting of the Home Nursing Committee was held in the School on Wednesday evening. It is anticipated that two members periodically will attend the Westport Hospital to receive sixty hours’ training in the various duties in connection with the work.

The, late Mrs. A. O'Hara, of Westport, who died in the Westport Hospital at 2.30 a.m. on Thursday last, was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. Carroll, of Stockton. The late Mrs. O’Hara was well known to most Stockton residents and the sympathy of the whole community will be extended to the sorrowing relatives in their loss. Mrs. H. L. Evans, has returned alter spending an extended holiday m New Plymouth. Mr. K. Williams, of New Plymouth, is spending a short holiday with his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Evans. Mr. D. Hill, of Westport, was a visitor to Stockton on Thursday last. Mrs. Ilton, postmistress, has returned after spending a week in Westport. Mr. D. Kirkwood, has returned to Millerton after three weeks’ duty at the local post office, relieving Mrs. Ilton.
