HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, September 16. Owing to the bar shoaling, the Gael and Hokitika have both been compelled to restrict their loadings of timber. It .was hoped to dispatch both ships this evening. At the Borough Council meeting last evening, there were present: The Mayor, Mr G. A. Perry, Crs. W. H. Stopforth. C. Caliari. D. P. Stuart, E. IV. Heenan, A. R Elcock, G. Heinz, J G. Havill, and T, W. Duff. The Treasurer reported: Receipts £3115 19s Id, expenditure £1035 17s 2d. Accounts amounting to £Bl3 8s 6d were passed. The Abattoir report stated: The stock slaughtered in August amounted to 13 cows, 29 heifers, 64 bullocks, 192 sheep, 1 lamb, 14 pigs, 3 calves; condemned, 1 cow. Fees amounted to £56 12s 6d, compared witty £5B 17s 6d for the corresponding month last year. Mr G. H. Chapman is representative on the Central Executive of the E.P.S at Greymouth. Messrs Park, Murdoch and James’ application to have an area in Weld Street sub-divided for Mr K. W. Reece was granted. The WestCoast Rugbv League was granted the use of Cass Square on Saturday week next, September 27, for a match in which Sea View Club is engaged. The League is devoting the proceeds to the Patriotic Fund The Council agreed to find a proportion of the cost of a Matron’s residence at Westland Hospital. Consent wa- - given to the transfer to H. M. Coulson of a section between his residence and Jeffries and Co.’s store. The Beautifying Society wrote expressing 1 appreciation of the Council’s efforts to clean up the streets, and made a request for the paths leading to the swimming baths to be tar sealed. Authority was given the Town Clerk to employ an assistant to relieve Mr Parham while on sick leave. It was resolved that, owing to the height, the “no parking” sign must be kept in Revel] Street, and notices be also painted on the street surface. Mr A. R Wright wrote asking that the road formation in Rolleston Street north of Park Street be extended to section 1504, as it is his intention to erect a dwelling there, and Mr W. Campbell. Fitzherbert Street, wrote asking that the drain on the east side of Fitzherbert Street from Hampdent Street to his property, receive attention. These matters were referred to the Works Committee. Samuel George Veale, Sale Street, applied to surrender lease 2272 in respect of Municipal Reserve No. 539. and to be granted a new lease. —Granted At last evening’s meeting the Borough Council received a request from the Business Men’s Association for support for its request that the Defence Dept, should station at Hokitika a seuadron of the Air Force. The Council decided to take no action. The Mayor, Mr Perry, remarked that it would be presumptuous for the Council to join in such a request, as the matter was one purely for the officers of the- Air Force. Cr. Stopforth _said that_pther_ bodies had supported” the request and there would be no harm in the Council doing so. Cr. Elcock said that if the Department had to be guided by a decision of the Council on such a matter, they,would not be fit to hold their jobs. Cr Heenan said the matter was one entirely for the Air Force, whose officers had recently Visited here, Captain Mercer was the only one locally whom they should consult, At the weekly Rugby Sub-Union meeting there were present Messrs A. H. Lawn "(chair), M. Davidson. C. L. Harper. u J. P Coulson and E. W. Heenan. A third grade fixture was made for Saturday, Kiwis versus Excelsiors (referee. Mr Olson). Ruatapu Club were given permission for their seven-a-side tournament at Ruatapu on Saturday, September 27. Mr Lawn submitted a statement on the Air Force match, disclosing a substantial loss. It was decided to make a progress payment’ on the accounts, and to submit the statement to the West Coast Union. The Golf Club’s .No. 6 medal and third qualifying ma'tch was played on Saturday, and Turner was the winner. Greymouth Club defeated Hokitika in the Taylor Cup match, the i’esults (Grey players first) being: Caulton

In the Ladies Clubs Sep t.ember medal match. Mrs mcclesheld was the winner in the Silver Division. 95/18/77. . Mrs- Harper won the Bronze Division, 106/30/76 Ihe Stableford Bogey was won by Mrs Bowman after a count back, Mrs Dawe. 32 points. The draw for the September Bogey is as Miss Ramsay v.
