U.S.A. ANTI-WAR LEADER

Postcard Campaign ARMY OFFICERS AMONG RECIPIENTS. WASHINGTON, July 24. Mr Stimson (Secretary for War) stated that Senator Wheeler (who is a leader in the agitation against the United States going to war), mailed postcards to United States army officers and men, urging them to oppose American entry in the European war The address side of the card read, “Write to the President to-day that you are against our entry in the European war.” On the reverse side were excerpts of speeches by President Roosevelt, ex-President Hoover, Senator Wheeler, Senator Nye, Mr J. Kennedy (former United States Ambassador to Britain), and Colonel Lindbergh. Senator Wheeler admitted to the newspapers that he posted approximately one million cards to a cross section of citizens, in an effort to hold the President to his pledge to keep the United States out of war. Mr Stimson said: “I think this comes very near the line of subversive activities against the United States, if not treason, when such* appeals are addressed to soldiers, the action crossed the line of what General Marshall called sabotage. The army regulations provide, except as authorised by the War Department, that efforts to procure or influence legislation affecting the army, or procure a personal .favoui’ through legislation, are forbidden.” Replying to Mr Stimson’s charge of the nearness to subversiveness and treason, Senator Wheeler said that no one should be too hard on an old man in his second childhood.
