STOCKTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). Mr. D. Mcßae, of Wailsend, addressee a special meeting of the Ngakawau Miners’ Union in the Stockton Hall on Sunday last in support of his candidature for the Secretaryship of the United Mine Workers’ Organisation. Mr. F. Connew presided. The speaker dealt witn rhe problems of organisation of the industrial workers and spoke of the necessity of greater control by tne rank and file; the purchasing power of wages to-day as against the prewar rate; and many other matters affecting the conditions of the workers in general. At the conclusion of his address, the speaker answered a number of questions and a vote of thanks was carried unanimously by the members present. The Patriotic Society held its weekly ’euchre tournament in the Library on Tuesday night. Mr. H., Fitzsimmons won the first prize. Mr. D. Halloran met with an accident in the mine last week, and is unable to follow his employment. Mr. J. Morgan is on the sick list, but is showing signs of improvement. Mrs. T. Burgess and Mrs. J'. Fleming and son, of Christchurch, have left after spending a holiday with Mr. and Mrs. J. Morgan, of Stockton. Stockton Co-operative Picture Company held a shareholders’ meeting on July 20th., and Mr. W. Parfitt was the successful applicant for the bar for the ensuing twelve months. Mr. and Mrs. C. Steele, have returned after spending a holiday at Denniston with their relatives. Mr. and Mrs. N. Morgan, spent last week-end at Denniston. Mrs. H. Lavery and family, of Westport, are spending a holiday in the township with Mr. and Mrs. C. Steele. Mr. C. Friend, of Westport, paid a visit to Stockton on Tuesday. The Women’s Institute celebrated its sixth birthday with a social evening in the Stockton Hall. About fifty guests were in attendance. Items were given by members of the Institute, and by some of the visiting members. Mrs. Strang (President of the Millerton Institute), read the Aspirations. Mrs. Ilton. President of the local Institute, presided over a very happy gathering, which ended with the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem. Seamen Connew and Hall, of the Navy, are spending short leave with Mr. and Mrs. F. Connew.
