Mr vv. H. Stopforth, of Hokitika, is at present visiting Bruce Buy. He Win return to Hokitika towards tne end of the week. Mi and Mrs C. Wright, of Tiinaru. are at present spending a short honday in Hokitika. An inquest as to the death of the late William Smith was on Monday heid bv Coroner A. E. Benjamin. The evidence snowed that deceased, who had lor 20 years worked on tin, Rjmu Flat Dredge, appeared in his usual health when working up till noon .on Saturday last (the day before his death) when he knocked off for the usual half Jioliday, though he had earlier in the week complained of a pain in the chest. On Sunday he had his usual good breakiasi and attended church, returning home at 11.30 a.m.. when he complained o ueing unwell, and went to bed, being given a hot-water bottle. Dr. Alike.. was summoned, but deceased passed away oefore me arrival of the doctor Dr. Aitken, who conducted a post mortem, found deceased to nave been in good physical condition, though the heart showed an extensive area of recent infarction, which was the. cause of death. Death was due to bo’.ckage of the coronary artery. A verdict was returned accordingly. Table Tennis. —An effort is being made to form a West Coast Table Tennis Association covering all the clubs at present on the West Coast. Inter-Club Debate. —At St. Mary's Club-rooms, at the Club’s weekly meeting, there was an interesting debate between the District High School teachers and a team representing the C.lub, the subject being: "That Competitive Recreations Do More Harm Than Good." Magistrates Court. —An elderly man was to-aay convicted by Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M., and was lined lUs tor casting offensive matter in SewelSt. The licensee' of the City Hotel, Ross, was fined £2 for having it open after hours, and' four persons found on the premises were each lined 5s and costs.

Warden’s Court. —The following applications were successful to-day: L and C. A. Mackley, ordinary prospecting license, Blk. X, Waimea; Maori Gold Ltd. ordinary prospect ng license. Blks. XV and XVI, Waimea; W. B. Gilbert, certificate .of protection. Applications adjourned were: Charles Donovan, license for a claim in B!k. XVI, Okarito; Ellen Sullivan, ordinary prospecting license in Block XIV, Waimea; Lily and C. A. Mackley. certificate of protection; Kumara Alluvials Lt., water race in Blks. XVI and VII, Waimea. An application by N.Z. Prospecting and Mi.iing Ltd. for a special dredging claim in Blk. 11, Kanieri, was withdrawn. Borough Council. —At the ordipa rmmeeting there were present His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs T. W Duff. D. P. Stuart. S Havill, A. R. E.'cock, E. W Heenan, and C Caliari The audited balance sheet duly certified, was adopted, the tender of the “Guardian- and Times” for the printing was accepted. Kanieri Electric Company notified that power fo r the street lights had been increased to 5 amps, the normal amperage being 6.6, while the town sides of the shades were being turned up, which would increase the lighting in the town area. Chesterman was appointed to >upervise the laying of one mile of hew Hume concrete pipes by the Kanieri Dredging Company. Tho Hospital Board notified an increase in its levy amounting to £3O 10s 6d, making the total £2,803 16s 4ci. it was resolved to set aside the reserve bounded bv the Kanieri arid ’Ji'.'.e Spur roads as a scenic area. Cr. Stuart, who sponsored the plan, said the area contained every known native' tree, and was worth preservation. Mr R. Lynn’s resignation as clock attendant was accepted, and the Town Clerk. was empowered to make a new appointment.
