John Patrick Hansbury was charged, on the information of Traffic Inspector B. R. Hill, that on June 7, at. Paroa, he did drive a Chevrolet ’car without a' driver's license, was convicted and fined £1 and 10s costs, by Mr. G. G. Chisholm, S.M.. in the Magistrate’s Court .at Greymouth yesterday. Legal action is to be taken against two military defaulters in the Grey district. After ignoring the usual notices, both men were advised bv “Gazette” notice to attend for medical examination, but failed to respond. The number of defaulters in the Grey district, only two since the commencement of the ballots for military service, is low. compare:l with the defaulters in other districts. The training of auxiliary firemen at Cobden is now considerably advanced, and the seven men are taking a keen interest in their work regularly attending the Sunday morning parades. The auxiliaries should prove invaluable to the Brigade, which comprises only 12 members who have a much larger populated area under their control than before the Brigade was amalgamated with the Greymouth Brigade. Will our numerous customers throughout Westland please note that we are open for business all day, every Saturday, till 9 p.m.—H. Hamer, Kumara.—Advt.

Reference to puoils leaving school before the end of the year was made by the Principal (Mr W. M. Stewart) in his monthly report to the Gre> ■ mouth Technical Hji School Board of Managers, last evening. Mr Slewart stated: “In the five weeks which have elapsed since the last meeting of the Board, 19 pupils have been withdrawn—l 3 bo vs and 6 girls; of these eight have left the dst Let. while most of the others have left school to po into emp’ovment locallv. I have to draw attent’en to the tec! that the practice of withdrawing pupils in their school course is one? more becom’ng too frequent. While it is recognised that war conditions make it inevitable that more pup’ls must leave school to take the places of those who go on active serv’ce. it cannot be too often or too strongiv impres'cd unon parents that to remove a pupil in the m’dd’e of the second vear does not give the pupil a chance.”
