WAIUTA NOTES

LOur Own Correspondent], ’ In the matter of a medical service, ’ Kumara and adjoining districts are - j undoubtedly a long suffering public, ) I and it is doubtful if any other disl J trict would suffer the lack without a ; I public protest. One learns that there > j are 16 nersons from Kumara in hos- ' 1 pital and they are probably the most ■ severe cases. It is reasonable to asI sume that at least four times that . number are receiving first aid and • advice and are treated locally. Were , it not for the wonderful service ren- ' dered by' Mr E. Rose (District Super- .! intendent of St. John .mibulance BriGgade) no doubt some sort of public * protest would have been lodged. Mr Rose has admirably responded to the beck and call of people seeking ins skill as an expert in first aid. At any hour of the day or night he has come forward to render aid, and supplied material, and has rendered the service free of charge. Had his services ; not been available the people would iiave had to send a strong protest to | I the Health Department. There is. > jiGjtfrever, a limit to the endurance anil generosity of any citizen. Mr Rose has himself addressed the fol- ; lowing letter to Mr a. B. Spiers, i Mayor of Kumara: Dear Sir,—Since II took up residence in this district, 1 three and a half years ago. I have been called upon to attend to over two hundred cases of accident or illness, which has cost me a fair sum for material. As we are all aware, i I there is no doctor in the district, and; some of the accident cases would ’ have bled to death before arriving at' hospital had the bleedino- not been; arrested, whereas I was very pleased i to be able to report all the persons i I recovered in a short space of time.' ' Sir, I would be greatly obliged if l : your Councillors would annrove of providing the necessary material for . me to render first aid for these cases ; in the future, as this material is too I expensive for me to purchase out of' my own pocket all the time. Hoping > Sir, this meets with ■''our Council’s approval. Yours faitmully, E. Rose.
