BOROUGH COUNCIL

ORDINARY MEETING. ■ There were present at the ordinary meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council on Thursday evening: me Mayor (Mr F. A. Kitchingham), Crs. H. Herring. J. B. Kent, A. H. MeKane, P. Blanchliela junr., F. F Boustridge, C. Neville, J. Saunders G. R'. Harker, G. M. Truman, the Engineer (Mr A. J. Fairmaid), and the Town Clerk (Mr F. H. Denton). The Canterbury Employers’ Assn, extended an invitation to the Council to join the association, the letter being recieved and ■■ filed for reference. Greymouth Fire Board advised that the Council’s contributions for the quarter, £154 7s 6d, was now due. An invitation was received for members to attend the Fire Brigade’s annual social on Saturday, and the Mayor said that it would be a nice gesture if as many members attended as could do so. Mr A. G. McNeill, Bright Street, Cobden, advised that his propertv was frequently being flooded. An open drain in front had been filled in by the council and the water now came from the road on to the property.— : The letter was referred to the engineer, with power to act. Greymouth Evening Star Coy. advised the council of an increase in advertising rates of 25 per cent., owing to increased costs. The Town Clerk was instructed to cut down advertising as much as possible. The District Railways Engineer forwarded a plan of the sub-division of the railway housing block at Cob- ' den, which was referred to the Town . Planning Committee. J. W. Massey wrote offering to the highest bidder, a painting of a presentation by six or eight West Coast gentlemen, headed bv Sir J. G. Ward to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, after-1 wards King George V.—The letter' was received, no action being taken. Mr E. B. E. Taylor wrote on behalf of Mr E. J. Rundle, in connection I with flooding on his property in ' Shakespeare Street. The engineer C reported that the work would be c done, and it was decided to reply to fc that effect. A. J. and. I. H. Pentecost, Sturge St., Cobden, advising that action would be taken against the council on me grounds of negligence in respect of injuries suffered by them when they fell in a ditch when running across the west footpath of Ward Street, Cobden on July 4, 1941. —On the motion of Cr McKane it was decided tnat the letter be referred to the Borough solicitors. Cr Herring said that a footpath was required on the east side of Blake Street, in front of the residence of J. Ellery, senr. It had been promised many times, but had not been done. He objected to a coal ash footpath being put down in the Children’s Park before the footpath was done. He moved that a footpath surface be put down in the area stated. Cr Truman seconded the motion. Cr Boustridge said much money had been cut from the works estimates. Now Cr Herring was moving that new work be done. Cr Herring said that the work was on the programme. Cr Boustridge objected to the woi'K. Cr Herring said that he objected to unauthorised work being done before the promised work. Cr McKane said that work promised was often overlooked. He suggested that a record be kept of all such promises. Cr Neville said he was sick and tiped of objections being made to work done on reserves. Cr Herring liked to see wide bare streets, with no adornments. Cr Boustridge moved an amendment that the matter be referred to the Works Committee, Cr Harker seconding.—The amendment was carried, the Mayor making the casting vote
