PIPE BAND

Borough Council Grant MEMBERS GIVE £1 APIECE. The Greymouth Borough Council last night decided to make a grant of £lO towards the Highland Pipe Band, after debating the matter at some length. A lettei’ was received from the Band requesting a donation. , , Cr. J. B. Kent said the Band had done good work, and moved that £2o be granted. . , . The Mayor (Mr. F. A. Kitchingham) said that there was no possibility' of any increase in donations. Cr. F. F. Boustridge moved that £lO be granted, and that a letter of congratulation be’ sent to the Band on its line Cr. Saunders seconded the motion." Cr. Kent moved an amendment that £2O be donated, Cr. A. H. McKane seconding. The Mayor said that the estimates had been adopted, and Councillors had decided not to increase the general rate. Therefore, he must oppose any increased donation. If donations were increased, the Council would be faced with a larger overdraft next year. Cr. P. Blanchlield supported the Mayor's statement. Cr. McKane said he would support an increased donation, even at the expense of taking £lO off the donation of £6O to the Municipal Band. The Mayor said that only three days after they had adopted the estimates, Councillors were playing fast and loose with the finances. Cr. H. Herring objected 16 any donation, and gave notice of motion that the Municipal Band’s agreement be cancelled. Cr. G. R. Harker moved a further amendment that 'the Council spin the difference and grant £l5. Cr. C. Neville seconded. The motion that £lO be granted, was carried. Cr. McKane then suggested that the Councillors should show appreciation by each of the ten donating £1 to the Band. This suggestion was given effect.
