LOur Own Correspondent], HOKITIKA, July 14. Personal.—South Westland visitors to Hokitika include Messrs D. Nolan (Okuru), Cron, senr., and A. Cron (Haast). Mr .McGrath, of Hokitika, left for South Westland on Friday. Dr. J. F. C. Moore, of Greymoutn. was a visitor to Hokitika yesterday. Messrs R. Coulson and M. J. couison returned oh Saturday evening from a visit to the North Island. Mrs Forman, of Tauranga, arrived on Saturday to spend a holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs .1. P. Coulson, Hokitika. Mr A. Dowell, who was to have left to join the Fleet All Arm JJiis week, has received advice that w will not be required until a Inter date.

The. death took place, at Newmarket, Auckland, on Friday, of Mrs Ethel Lynn wife of Mr Robert Lynn, former well-known residents of Hokitika, who shifted to Auclc-etiid about four years ago A native o! Hokitika, deceased was a daughter of the late Joseph Brockehurst, jeweller of Hokitika Mrs Woolhouse (nee Ada Lynn), of Auckland, and Mrs J Howflt, are daughters, both wellknown to West Coasters as hav no, taken a leading part in many amateur theatrical shows. The late Mrs Lynn was a keen ‘worker in movements to advance the town before her departure. She is survived h-.- three sisters M r " 'Rnr”owmen nnd Miss Rubv Brocklehurst (Christchurch) and Mrs L. Conner (Wellington), also by one brother, Mr W. Brocklehurst. of the North Island. Mr and Mrs J. Howat ’eft for Auckland some weeks ago. The symnathv of friends throughout this district will be extended to the relatives in their bereavement. Accidents —On Saturday evening Mr D Kellv. of Woodstock, was knocked down near th P clock tower bv a motor car driven bv Mr DI. Hewlett, of Arahura Valley. Mr Kelly suffered a fracture of the right arm, and was admitted to Westland Hospital for medical treatment. The accident happened iust opposite the Rai' wav Road Service garage. Mr J Growcott. employed in tb.e bush at Mananui sawmill, suffered painful injuries through be’ng struck under the chin by a sanl’ng which sprung up as he cut it with his axe. His mates missed him, and on searching found him lying unconscious. After being taken to Hokitika for medical attention, he was able to go to his home, and is progressing favourably.

New Post Office.—Some concern is expressed at the decision to have the main entrance to the new Post Office facing Sewell Street. It had been understood that it would face Weld Street, which is the widest street in the town while Sewell Street is narrow. With the traffic at the Post Oilice, congestion takes place in a narrow street. It is more than likely an effort will be made to have the entrance in Weld Street, now one m the main avenues of the town.

St. Mary’s Debating Club.—There was a good attendance at the weekly meeting of St Mary’s Debating Club last evening, when the main item on the programme was an interesting address by Rqv. Dr. Harrison, who took an architectural sublet-* “The Four Great Bascilicas of Rome.” At the conclusion of the address a hearty vote of thanks was carried with acclamation. A debate was sei down for July 20. with the teachers of the District High School. Mr C. Groufsky reported on an enjoyable recent table tennis match with Hokitika Club Women’s Institute. —Mrs J. Bradlev presided at the meeting of m.*’ Arahura Women’s Institute. The motto was “Make the most of the summer sun and use th P winter rain,” and the roll call “How to improve our Institute.” . Invalided Soldiers—The Rauway Station was packed on Sattuuay evening when the express orougni Hokitika soldiers returned from the Middle East. The Municip'al Band played a programme, and membeu of the ’Returned Soldiers’ Association and Patriotic Committee were present. Messrs A. R. Elcock (Deput* Mayor), and W. H. Stopiorth (Borough Councillor), and Patriotic Committee members voiced a cord.ai welcome to the men, who were conducted to a dais, where Mr Stopforth gave a very appropriate speech expressed the pleasure of the citizens at seeing the soldiers once again m their midst At the conclusion of his remarks, hearty cheers were for the soldiers, who were then hurried to their homes by their parents. The Hokitika men were Corporal Ken Wallace, son of Mr and Mrs Ken Wallace, of Hampden Street, Hokitika and Private 8.-McCormack, non of Mr and Mrs W. McCormack, oi Rimu. Private Shivas did notjarrive, having remained at the Wellington clearing hospital for further medical treatment. The men were glad to be back, and expressed their gratitude to the people for a welcome they described as wonderful. Private. McIntosh, who arrived from the MiddleEast some weeks ago, was the first soldier to return from active service.
