TRADE S COUNCIL MEETING

Conscription ' Bst Coast Trades Council May 17th. Mr S. BlMncil endorsed the prmproposed “Standards" that a stand-

ard quality product is necessary in view of the decision to standardise prices. . It was decided to supply "The Magazine Page’’ with information received regarding the B.M.A. and Medical Benefits.

It was resolved to circularise a unions affiliated to this council regarding a pooling scheme for travelling expenses. One of the delegates on the Home Guard Committee reported on the activities of the Greymouth Committee, mentioning that the Committee was in favour of conscription for Home Guard service. He was opposed to conscripting man power for

Home Guard service as it conflicted with the democratic aims and functions of the Guard, and in consequence he tendered his resignation as a member of the Home Guard Committee. ' The Council is also opposed to the actions of the Man Power Commit-

tee in making it a condition when granting appeals that the appellant join the Home Guard, thus enforcing a measure of. conscription. The annual meeting of the Council takes place on June 14. The election of officers will be held and the financial statement presented.
