Visited by Mr Fraser

INTEREST IN TRAINING AND

RATIONS.

(Received May 20, 11.20 p.m.). (From N.Z.E.F. Official News Service).

CAIRO, May 29

Continuing his detailed inspection of the New Zealand Forces l in the Middle East, Rt. Hon. P. Fraser today visited a large New Zealand base camp. He first went to the Field Supply Depot. He showed great interest in the whole of the arrangements for the supply of meat, vegetables, and dry rations to the forces. He was pleased to see a considerable amount of New Zealand produce being used. I The "Sergeant-Butcher said that meat which Mr Fraser inspected was good North Island beef. ’ For the first time since his arrival in the Middle East, Mr Fraser saw troops in training and learning the use of field guns which wrought such havoc on the’ Huns in Greece, and learning to apply fine Instrumental work of survey to the needs of war. s'

. During his visit to the Artillery Survey Company, Mr Fraser met and chatted ’with several Public Works Department engineers, who arc carrying out the traditions of the Department in the Army. Mr Fraser had morning tea with infantry sergeants, a s hd visited a Y.M.C.A. hut. He was gratified to see step? being taken to provide recreational facilities in our camps. An inspect:on of the Lowry Hut, which is in the course of eredlion, concluded the morning programme. Here MrFraser met Mrs A. P. F. Chapman, who is the only lady Y.M.C.A. worker with the’ New Zealand troops. The hut is fitted out in a manner that ( will enable it to be used readily for entertainments and other purposes. Without doubt it is one of the best of its kind in the Middle East.
