Borough Council:

HOKITIKA, April 22.

Cr. A. R. Elcock (Deputy-Mayor) presided at the meeting of the Borough Council on Tuesday evening, the following other members being also present: Crs. T. Duff, C. Calarai, J'. Fox, W. H. Stopforth and D. Stuart. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor, Crs. Freitas and. Heinz. Westland Hos.pital Board notified that the levy for the Borough Council would be £2773 ,4s lOd, an increase of £571 2s 2d. The Deputy-Mayor said that although there was an increase in the levy for the coming year, the Board was doing its best to run the hospital economically. It was agreed to recommend the levy to the incoming Council for their favourable consideration, and adoption. Kanieri Electric Company wrote drawing the Council’s attention to the dangerous nature of trees overhanging the power lines along Cass Square. Mr E. Hewer offered to remove the trees at a given cost per tree. The Council appointed tjhe following members to confer with the Power Company: Crs. Duff. 1 Stopforth, Calarai, and Stuart. The Library Committee requested the Council to ask the incoming Council to consider their request for an additional subsidy of £B5 for the Public Library, which would enable the committee to avail itself of the Country Library service, and townspeople would have free reading for the amount of the extra subsidy. It was agreed to refer the request ot the incoming Council. After a long discussion the Council resolved to refer the question of the need for a new town hall to the incoming Council for their urgent consideration. The Kanieri Electric Company advised its willingness to supply five-amp. lights for a reduction of 20 per cent, on the present cost. Cr. Duff said the lights in their present form were useless, , but as the Council had to pay ac- | cording to their agreement, the offer ■ should be accepted for the duration | of the black-out period. This was j agreed to. The Council discussed the . advisability of tar-sealing Revell St., . it being stated that there were many difficult problems to be overcome, but it was essential that something be done. The matter was also referred to the incoming Council. Sports Club: Mr J. Taylor occupied the chair at a meeting of the Hokitika Sports | Club on Monday evening. A statement of receipts and expenditure for the patriotic sports meeting which took place on March 29 was submitted, and showed a profit of £7B. The j chairman said the excellent return ] was due to the efforts of all those assisting. The gate' return was the lowest on record, and was exceedingly disappointing when the profits were going to such a worthy cause. The secretary was instructed to pay the sum of £7B to Mrs Doreen (secretary of the Queen Carnival Committee) with instructions to divide the amount equally to each queen. In view of existing conditions, the Club resolved to curtail activities for the duration of the war, to invest portion of its reserve fund in national savings, and to carry forward a balance in the working account. The use of the Club’s timber etc., was granted to the Red Cross Committee for their meeting at the Mental Hospital on Saturday. Messrs Taylor and Phillips issued a' challenge for a 12inch sawing contest with any other than recognised bushmen. The challenge was speedily accepted by two School-teachers, Messrs Harper and Gillespie, who are to receive 5 seconds start. Mr Phillips also offered to challenge any person his own age •

to a chopping contest with a 12-inch log. Mr Taylor undertook ot have the challenge accepted. The chairman’s report will be published tomorrow together with a copy of the balance sheet of the patriotic sports; meeting.
