March 18 The Korowai is in port loading coal for Auckland, and is to be despatched to-morrow « The Kiwitea is in port loading coa. for New Plymouth and Napier, and is expected to be despatched tomorrow The Wingatui is expected from Wellington on Friday to load coal for return tc Wellington The Kartigi is expected from Auckland about Tuesday next to load coa’: for Auckland and Portland. The Totara is expected from Wellington on Tuesday next to load coal for return to the same port. Personal: Mrs A. G. Colvin returned t.o-da.v from a visit to Rangiora. Mr K. Shaw, of Wellington, wim has been visiting Westport, left ; on return yesterday. Mr T. Menzies, of the Wigram Air Force station, visited his parents al Westport over the week-end Matron E. B. Peterson, of the Buller Hospital, returns to-day from holiday leave. Mrs Barton and daughter, of Nelson, who have been visiting Granny left to-day on return to Nelson. Mr Bill’ Walker, Tirora, is at present. an inmate of the Buller Hospital. Mr and Mrs Hayes and Mr and Mrs J. Barton, of Auckland, are visiting Westport on a motoring tour. Mr and Mrs Barton Were former Westport residents, who left here 30 yeas ago. The funeral of the late Mr J. C. Harden took place to Orowaiti Cemetery on Monday afternoon. There was a large attendance of mourners, and the many floral tributes testified to the esteem in which he was held. A service was conducted at the residence by the Rev. S. Corney and also at the graveside. The pallbearers were Messrs T. Rogt’s, senr, A. A. Wilkinson, W. Morgan and G Mason.

Education Board; The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was held today. Members present were: Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, chairman, Messrs Harkness, Carling, Barltrop, Knapp, Wilkins and Newman. The following Buller business was dealt with: Acocunt totalling £4335 was passed for payment The Burnett’s Face School Committee forwarded a petition from some parents on the question of the infant classes at the Burnetts Face' school going to the Denniston new consolidated school. The committee’s letter gave the figure of those in favour of the proposal and those against, also stating that a considerable number of parents would not express any opinion on the matter, and asked the Board to decide the question. The Board resolved that provided the Department approved of a conveyance contract starting from Coalbrookdale. th e Burnell’s Face school be closed and all pupils be- conveyed to Denniston. when the new school opens The question of where the Seddonville new school will be erected was referred tg the chairman, Mr Harkness and the secretary with power to act. The Board approved of the architect’s plans for a new school at Westport North, and forwarded same to the Department. In connection with the function for the opening of the Westport South new school the Board decided to ask the present school committee at Westport to take charge of all arrangements. In this connlection also, that the committee continue in office until the Westport North new school is completed. The Tioroa Committee was granted £lO towards special incidental expenses. The Waiuta Committee was granted the cost of repairs to windows. The Department forwarded a circular intimating that a subsidy of up to 50 per cent would he granted towards the cost of learners’ swimmmg pools constructed by school committees under certain conditions The Board decided to send a copy of the circular to all school committees. The secretary reported that as a result of representation to the Department, three additional students had been admitted to Training College from the Nelson edocation district. The Reefton School Committee wrote asking that a meeting of the Board be held at Reefton The chairman pointed out that the Board had just held a Board meeting at Takaka and could not again ask lhe Minister for authority ~at present. However. the Board favoured the [proposal and decided that t.h e next Board meeting held away from Nelson would be at Reefton. Two applications were received for the position of infant mistress at Westport, Miss D. Lovett, of To Kuiti was appointed. Mr C. Irvine, of Blackwater, was appointed secondary assistant at the Murchison District High School. The 'appointment of Miss M. Rogers as sole teacher at Waitahu was confirmed.

A Conducted Tour: A party .of 21 tourists from Wellington under th e direction of Mr J. J. Casey, arrived yesterday by special, bus from Nelson, in the course of a tour of the West Coast. They proceed south to-day, going on to the Glaciers. The visitors so far are delighted with their tour,. the 1 scenery in the Buller Gorge inspiring one and all as magnificent, far surpassing their anticipations A Blue Heren: A blue heron has made its appearance on the Orowaiti River and is the subject of much local inter■est.
