HOKITIKA NOTES

[Our Own correspondent] HOKITIKA, February 14. Following overnight showers, the day has remained; rainy and somewhat cold. The funeral of the late rs Mary Peake took place this afternoon, leaving her late 1 residence, Brittan Street, at 1 p.ip., for St. Mary’s Church and thence for the Cemetery. There was a large attendance, — including many Kokatahi residents. Rev. Father Finerty conducted the services _at th e church and graveside.

Mr A. D. Spencer, the Physical Training Director of the Home Guard for the West Coast areas will next week visit Hokitika, commencing th e training next Friday of representatives of the Home Guard units ofi Ross, Ruatapu, Koiterangi, Kokatahi, Arahura and HokitikaTwo representatives of each unit will be trained by Mr Spencer and they in turn wilt impart th e instruction to their respective branches. Additional Home Guard enlistments m the district are recorded as follows: Arahura, R. W. G. Dalgleish, R. Hutana, Rore Tauwhare; Kanieri: Wm. C. Johnston, Leonard Jones; Harihari: Leslie N. Diedrichs, Patrick J. Haddock, Hans J. Shearer. At the Koiterangi Women’s Institute meeting on Tuesday evening, Mrs Havill presided over a fair attendance, Mrs Jonc s reading the aspirations. The competition results wer e as follows: Slice of plum pudding: Seniors: Mrs De Filippi 1, Mrs Tinetti 2. Juniors: Miss M. De Filippi. Cottage posy in jug: Seniors: Mrs A. S. Havill. Juniors: Miss S. Havill. It was decided that the birthday party early in April take the form of a social evening, with progressive games, competitions, etc., and that instead of dances for the Institute funds, each member should bring Is. A letter of thanks for use of his launch at Lak. e Mahinapua on January 5 was directed to be forwarded to Mr G. Michel. Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Dimmick and Fearn.

At a meeting last evening at the County Chambers to, consider ways of raising patriotic funds, Mr A. R. Elcock (Deputy Mayor) presiding, there were over 80 present, the majority being ladies. It was decided to decline the suggestion of the Greymouth executive for the holding of a queen carnival for the West Coast. Instead it was decided to hold a queen carnival limited to Westland County, with three op four candidates, and that Ross and Kumara be asked to participate. It was also decided to have a committee of eleven, including on e Ross and one Kumara member, and the following Hokitika representatives: Mesdames A. Stevenson and T. Stuart, Messrs J. Richards, H. C. Rowe, W. Sanders, F. Williamson, arid M. H. Houston. It was also decided to recommend the appointment of Mrs Dorreen and Mr Crosble as joint secretaries and organisers, and to conclude the carnival on May 3. Various suggestions for the carnival were then discussed under the chairmanship of Mr M. H. Houston,
