MILLERTON NOTES

[dur Own Correspondent] The annual meeting of the Millerton Library was held on Friday night, Mr. J. Orman presiding. The balance sheet was read and adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Mr. J. Orman (Chairman), Mr. C. Orman (Secretary-Treasurer); Committeemen: Messrs T. J'ackson, T. Calder, T. Douglas, T. Cunniffe, M. Cunniffe, G. Mazey and J. Milligan. Auditors: Messrs D. McEwan and J. McKinlay. The Millerton School children’s picnic will be held at Mokihinui on Saturday, February 22nd. A farewell social and dance was tended to Mr. and Mrs. L. Shannon on Friday evening, there being a large gathering of the public of Millerton and other parts of the district. The farewell was made under the auspices of the various committees on the hill, of which Mr. and Mrs. Shannon were members. During the evening a presentation was made by Mr. R. Tack, Chairman of the Physical Committee. The speaker stated that it gave him much pleasure to be given the honour to say a few words on behalf of the public of Millerton to Mr. and Mrs. Shannon before their departure. He was certain that their services would be missed on the various committees. Since Mr. Shannon had resided at Millerton, he has taken a keen interest in all things pertaining to the welfare of the people, having been exceedingly keen to see the erection of swimming baths, tennis courts, etc,

He was Chairman of the Patriotic Committee, Secretary of the Rugby Football Club, and was very interested in the National Savings Scheme. Mr. Jack then made Mr. and Mrs. Shannon the presentation of a handsome suit case and a beautiful travelling rug. Replying, Mr. Shannon stated that he had been Postmaster on the Hill for a short period, just over two and a half years, and during that time both himself and- Mrs. Shannon had made many friends. He also gave his first impressions of Millerton and how he saw it on the first day he arrived. Referring to the people on Millerton, he said that in his opinion they were easy to make friends with and he was pleased to see such a- large attendance present to wish Mrs. Shannon and himself the best of luck. In accepting the handsome present from the people of Millerton, he would just like to mention that anything he had done, he considered it is duty, but he was more than pleased that his services had met with the approval of the public. He thanked all present for the presents* and the splendid evening they had extended to him before his departure. A, dainty supper was provided by a ladies’ committee. Music was supplied by Mrs. R. Swan (piano), A. Mclntyre (piano accordeon) J. Herdman (trombone), and Miss Jill (saxophone), Mr. T. Murray and T. Beverland playing extras on accordeons. Messrs C. Orman and G. Plummer were the M’s.C. The Lucky Snot Waltz was won by Mr. P. Taylor and Miss L. Cooper, the Monte Carlo being won by Mr. G. Adams and partner. The Buller County Council have completed the local tennis courts, and according to public opinion, an

excellent job has been made oi them. The people on the Hill are now hoping that the swimming baths will be proceeded with and finished as soon as possible. The mine is still working full time. Mr. W. Clarke, President of the Union, visited Westport during the week to attend a Coal Commission sitting. Mr. P, Struthers, paid his. usual

visit to the Hill during'the week. The Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, left during the week for Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. R. McGavin, visited the Glaciers during the week-end. Mr. R. Mclntyre, visitea me Glaciers during the week-end.
