Mrs J'. Greenlees, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs A. Cornell, has left on return to Auckland.

Messrs H. Hatch and B. Johnston, of Auckland, arrived yesterday on a visit to Hokitika.

Miss J. Beatson was a passenger by yesterday's express from Christchurch.

Mr Jas. Bourke, Boddytown, returned yesterday after an extended visit to Wellington and the North Island.

Mr J. M, McKenzie, of the Greymouth staff of the National Bank, has received notice of transfer to Wellington.

Constable R. B. Wooding, of Greymouth, who has been transferred to the charge of the Denniston station, will leave on Monday next.

A New York cable states that the Australian singer, Miss Marjorie Lawrence, visited Mr La Guardia (Mayor of New York) and presented him with a boomerang and an Australian Armyhat. She also invited him to her British war benefit concert.

The death has been announced from Australia of Mrs Dart, widow of Archdeacon J. R. Dart, formerly of Reefton, Westport, and Nelson. Deceased is survived by two sons, Raynor and Jack.

The death, in her ninetieth year, of Mrs Smith, of Wellington, widow of Christopher Smith, founder of the firm of C. Smith, Ltd., has occurred at Wellington. A native of Kent, England, she came as a child with her parents, Mr and Mrs E. Wood, to Australia, residing first at Ballarat and later at Melbourne. Over sixty years ago she came to New Zealand, and in the following year, 1880, married Mr Smith at Wellington, where she had ever since resided. Her husband died in May, 1926, and her eldest son, Herbert, died in July of the same year. She is survived by three sons Horace and Aubrey G. (Wellington) and C. B. (Hamilton), and a sister, Miss Koturah Wood (Napier).

I The death occurred last evening, at ; his residence. Fox Street of a wellI known resident of Cobden; Mr William Ralph Baird, after an ’ illness lasting for nearly two years. A native of Barry’s Bay, Banks Peninsula', he was 59 years of age, and had resided in Cobden since 1921, prior to which he spent seven years in Blackball. Until eleven years ago, the late Mr Baird was a member of the Police Force, having joined it at Christchurch, and he resigned in 1929. He was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends. He leaves a wife and family of three sons, Richard (Hokitika), Ralph (GreyiY-outh) and William (Cobden), and three daughters, Mrs N. Culling and Misses Kathleen and Aileen Baird, all of Cobden. He is also survived by two step-brothers, Messrs Joseph and Frank Baird (Waiuta), and one step-1 sister. Miss Cis Baird. The eldest daughter, Mrs J’. Keller, of Cobden, ' predeceased him by four months. There are also nine grand-children. | The funeral takes place to-morrow morning, following Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church at 9 a.m.
