A TAURANGA MYSTERY., TAURANGA, February 8. Th.? mystery of th,, whereabouts of the auxiliary yacht Jeanette, which disappeared from her moorings at Mount Malnganui in the early hours of Tuesday last, has been followed by rather startling developments. It appears definite that the location of the yacht would lead Io th e discovery of Richard Humphreys. aged 22. who escaped from custody by jumping from a train between Frankton and To Awamutu on Thursday evening of last week. Tnere is strong evidence for believing that the disappearance of the yacht, is connected with the prisoner's bold dash for liberty
Four persons at the Mourn, including Mr J. C. Di'.mblcton. the owner of the yacht, have definitely identified a photograph of Humphreys as that of a man who. at the Mount on Sunday and Monday last, obtained a large quantity of stores and then disappeared. It is. believed that the yacht disappeared at 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday. The yacht. which is 20 feet in length, is Bermudian rigged, and is also equipped with a 5 h.p. engine She is a fairly easy vessel for one man to handle. However, there appears to be some evidence that there may lie at least two men aboard. There i s considerable conjecture as to the course taken once the vesse was at sea. To the south then? is little shelter, but. at the north there are several places in which it is thought a yacht could hide for a time.
