Squadron Leader Deere PROMOTION ANNOUNCED. WANGANUI, February 10. Flight-Lieutenant A. C. Deere, D.F.C., with bar. has been promoted to Squadron Leader, according to cabled advice received by his parents, Mr and Mrs T. J. Deere. Plymouth Street, Wanganui. He was awarded the D.F.C. in June for flying exploits in France, during which he shot down five planes. In August, Squadron Leader Deere was awarded a bar to his D.F.C. On Friday night, Squadron Leader Deere spoke on the Empire programme from Daventry. He has three brothers in the services—Brian Deere] with the Second N.Z.E.F., in L.ie Middle East; James Deere in the] Army; and Kevin Deere in the Royal Navy.

Magill, Ruakaka, Te Aroha. Flying Officer Macfarlane was born in Christchurch 24 years ago. He was educated -at Christ’s College, and was selected for a short service commis-

sion with the Royal Air Force in 1939. He is married. Flight Lieutenant Magill was born at Cambridge. He is 26 years ot age, and was educated at To Aroha District High School, He represented the school in Rugby football and cricket, and travelled to England in 1936. He was successful in an application for a short service commission with the Royal Air Force since July, 1936. His next of kin is his father, R. W. Magill.
