N.Z. PETROL STATIONS
Control by Home Guard IF EMERGENCY ARISES [Per Press Association] NEW PLYMOUTH, February 10. The assumption of control of all of the petrol stations in the Dominion by Home Guardsmen or by petrol station employees enrolled in the Home Guard for that specific purpose, is provided for in instructions that have been issued to transport officers of the Home Guard by the National Service Department headquarters, in conjunction with the Arms Department. Steps have already been taken in Taranaki to carry out the instructions, and at Hawera two members of petrol station staffs have enrolled. Transport officers throughout New Zealand have received instructions to see that either male members of petrol station staffs are enrolled with the Home Guard to take charge of the station in an emergency, or that not fewer than three Guardsmen are appointed to each petrol station. If the owner or manager of a petrol station is not enrolled in the Home Guard, the station will be taken over by the Home Guard, which will act in accordance with instructions.
