REEFTON NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent] REEFTON, February 5. Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Flintoff, Wellington, are visiting Reefton and ar the guests of Mr. J. Fielding. The Rev. T. L. Norwell, left this morning on a visit to Napier. Mr. Barry O’Regan, Wellington, son of Mr. John O’Regan, Cronadun, was successful in securing his B.A. degree at the recent University examinations, and is to be heartily congratulated upon hi s success. Mrs. E. Baird, who is in Westland Hospital, is reported to be making a good recovery, but some two or three weeks must elapse before she will leave the institution. A meeting of the Reefton Home Guard committee was held at the Council Chambers, Reefton, on Monday night. Present: Messrs W. G. Porter? A. Parkinson (representing the Reefton Returned Soldiers’ Association), F. Seawright, J. S. McGregor T. Watson (Inangahua County Council), and C. Lawn (representing the Reefton Business Men’s Association). Mr. Porter was elected to the chair. Mr. W. G. Porter was appointed Company Commander of the Reefton Home Guard, on the motion of Mr. Watson, seconded by Mr. Parkinson. It was resolved that a call be made for enrolments for the Home Guard in Reefton. Enrolment forms will be available at the County Council Chambers, Reefton, and at Lawn's stationers, Broadway. The Chairman and Mr. W. B. Auld were authorised, to make arrangements for securing a suitable hall for the holding of night parades. The newly appointed company commander is to call a parade at an early date. It was decided to advertise for enrolments for the Guard and to request the manager of the . local picture theatre to display an advertising slide on the picture screen asking for enrolments for the Home Guard in Reefton.
School of Mines examination results are—-Ventilation, Second Class pass: F. Rollison (Reefton), B. Alborn (Reefton). Mining (Coal)— First class pass: R. V. Alborn (Reefton). Mining (Gold)—First Class pass: A. G. Reid (Waiuta). Winding, Hauling and Pumping—Third Class pass: R. V. Alborn (Reefton). Metallurgy of Gold and Silver—First Class pass: F. Marshall (Waiuta). Assaying—First Class pass: E. Harris (Waiuta). Surveying—Third Class pass: Mr. H. Quinn (Blackball).
Mr. Fred Lynch, Junr., accompanied by his mother left for Christchurch on Saturday 'morning, where he will enter the Lewisham Hospital to undergo a serious operation. Pastures and fodder crops on Murchison and Inangahua Valley dairy farms are reported to have been prolific this summer by the District Stock Inspector, Mr Fleming. The turnip crop is a record.
