SWIMMING
Coast Championships TO BE HELD AT HOKITIKA. A decision to hold the West Coast senior, intermediate and junior championships and that the championship carnival be offered to the Hokitika Club, with the recommendation that the carnival be held on a Saturday night, not later than March 1, was reached by the West Coast Swimming Centre at a meeting on Tuesday. In the event of the Hokitika Club declining the offer, it was resolved that the carnival be offered to the Reefton Club. There were present at the meeting: Messrs H. Rattrey (chairman), F. Costello, S. Millar, W. Payne, F. W. Baillie, J. Woollett, G. Walters, W. Gieseking, R-. Bunt and I. Elder (secretary). An apology for absence was received from Mr G. G. M. Mitchell. Challenges for the John Burns Cup held by the Westport Club were received from the Grey and Reefton Clubs. 9 It was decided to forward the challenges to the Westport Club, and to ask them to make arrangements to 'meet the challenges. It was decided to conduct scratch races for primary school girls and boys at the Patriotic Carnival to be held on February 15, the winners of the respective races to be awarded the Chatauqua Medals. Children attending primary schools within a radius of 50 miles of Greymouth will be eligible to compete. The programme for the Patriotic Carnival was approved and arrangements for novelty events were left to Messrs Bunt and Walters and the programme committee. It was decided to ask the Patriotic Committee to arrange for a procession to the baths, and the presence of one of the bands on the night of the carnival.
