Mr G. G. M. Mitchell was a passenger by yesterday’s express from Christchurch.

The death occurred at the Reefton Hospital on Tuesday evenng of Danel McLaughlin, at the age of 72 years. A native of Eire, deceased came to Reefton 50 years ago, and had since been employed as a coal miner.

A cablegram from Melbourne states that the Australian War Cabinet has appointed Mr Frank Norman as official artist with the Royal Australian Navy. Mr Norton was born in New Zealand twenty-four years ago.

Rev. Father J. W. Dowfing, S.M., M.A., has been appointed headmaster of a new secondary school erected in Hastings for the Catholic boys of the district. The first assistant will be Rev. Father A. Hill of St. Bede’s College, Christchurch.’

Mrs. Harvey Ibbotson, of Hamilton, has arrived on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. W. S. McClymont, Kilgour Road. Mrs. Ibbetson, who is the South Auckland croquet champion, will spend about a month on the West Coast.

A London cable states Commodore L. W. Murray, of the Royal Canadian Navy, has taken up a newly created post as Commodore commanding the Canadian tships and establishment in the United Kingdom.

Miss M. Strang, Runanga, who has left for Wellington to take up a position in the Post Office, was entertained at a social evening at Mr and Mrs A. Wearn’s residence, prior to her departure. Mr L. A. Wearn, on behalf of her friends, presented her with a pen and pencil set. Miss Strang suitably replied.

A Sydney cable states that the death occurred yesterday of Mr Andrew Barton Paterson, who has been familiarly known as “Banjo Paterson,” and who Se . poems and ballads of Australian bush life made his name a household word throughout the Commonwealth. He was 76 yeavs of age.

The death occurred at Christchurch on Tuesday of John George Anderson, aged seventy-five years. He was: born in Glasgow and had been in business in Christchurch, as an auctioneer for a number of years. Besides his widow he is survived by two sons, William of Christchurch and Robert of Greymouth.

Mrs Oscar Garden wife of the well known Tasman pilot, has arrived at Auckland, by the flying-boat “Awarua,” after a 15,000-mile journey from Sweden by way of Russia, Iran and the East,, in order to rejoin her husband. Accompanying her was her nine-months-old daughter, Margaretta. Until he met his wife’ in Sydney, during the week-end, Captain Garden had not seen his daughter.

A farewell message to the people of New Zealand was issued last night on behalf of Lord Galway, who has now relinquisned the office of Gov-ernor-General, and has left the dominion on his return to Great Britain. Simultaneously with his departure, a proclamation was gazetted announcing that the Chief Justice, Sir M. Myers had assumed the office of Administrator of New Zealand. He will act in this capacity till Lord Galway’s successor, Sir Cyril Newall, arrives in the Dominion, and is sworn in as Governor-General. Sir C. Newall was recently reported to have arrived in Canada on his way to New Zealand. In his farewell message Lord Galway expressed keen appreciation of many kindnesses extended to his wife and himself during his six years’ residence in the country.—Press Assn.
