About 70.000 residents of Christchurch will be entitled to vote in ths municipal elections for Mayor and council next May. according to estimates made by officials of the Christchurch City Council. This will be an increase of nearly 12,000 on the roll number for the 1938 elections, the total being swelled by some 5.000 residents of New Brighton Borough, which is to be amalgamated with the city.

The main roll for the Christchurch municipal elections closed on Friday, and although the exact number will not be known until the lists are in the hands of the printer this week, it is estimated that the total number of electors on this roll will be about 55,000 or nearly as many as were on both the main and supplementary rolls for the 1938 elections. On that occasion the main roll contained 45,575 electors and the supplementary roll 10,744, 'a total of 58,319. The supplementary roll .will close on April .16 unless special legislation is introduced to alter the date of the elections. It is estimated that the supplementary roll this year will number about 15,000, of whom some 5,000 will be New Brighton residents, brought into the city for the first time under the amalgamation scheme.
