NORWAY BISHOPS

SUSPECT NAZI REGIME. (Received February 4, 7.40 p.m.) LONDON February 4. “The Times” Stockholm representative says: “Seven Bishops in Norway have sent a joint letter to M. Standee, the Quislingist Minister for the Church and Education, asking whether the State acknowledges it> self as bound by law and morality as contained in the Bible, and also by the confession on which the Church’s faith is based. Since last April, theBishops of Norway have frequently instructed the clergy and the congregations to respect the law, under the belief that they would enjoy full religious freedom according to Herr Hitler's order, and also to Herr Terboven’s promise that the Courts of Justice would remain independent. The Bishops now state that serious doubts have recently arisen as to whether their instructions to the clergy and the congregations are still justified, and they, therefore, ask for a clear statement on the issue.
