RINKS SURVIVORS

SEVERAL FROM COAST Yesterday’s Bowls Results [Per Press Association] CHRISTCHURCH, January 15. Although the heavy rain of the previous afternoon deadened all of the greens, sunshine and a good breeze dried them out during to-day, and while not keen, they were running freely for the second game of the day in the New Zealand Fours’ Bowls Championship. The abandonment of play on Tuesday afternoon left tag ends of games to be played on practically every green this morning necessitating the shortening of the fifth game to 21 ends. At the conclusion of play in the sixth game, 15 fours had won all of their games, and thus had qualified. Eighteen teams had five wins, and to qualify they must win one of the two games set down for Thursday. Of the fifteen fours who have qualified. two are skipped by men who have each won the Fours Championship twice, namely, H. Wilson (Linwood), and R. Haworth (Canterbury). F. H. Gibson played third for Wilson at Dunedin in 1934, and he again occupies that position. R. Haworth has entirely a new combination, with his son. C. A. Haworth (Wanganui), at second. Out of those already qualified, five learns are from Christchurch, two each from the West Coast, Southland, and Wellington, and one each from Hawera and Blenheim.

Judging by the personnel of these teams, the post-section play should be particularly interesting, and more especially if some of the other Fours, now knocking at the door with five wins, manage to get their final point on Thursday. Included among those with five wins are W. Bremner (Auckland), W. Carswell (Ta'ieri), W. J. Crawford (Otago), W. Anderson (Dunedin), J. Veitch (Dunedin), T. Ferguson (Balmacewen) P. Munn (Canterbury), J. S. Martin (United), and R. E. McNish (Canterbury). Five of the rinks with fours come from Dunedin, four from Christchurch. three from Auckland, two from Wellington, and one each from Timaru. Oamaru, the West Coast and Port Ahuriri.

F. Livingstone (Onehunga), has lost two lives, and he must win both his games to-day if he is to go on to the post section play, a position in which quite a number of others are placed. A Singles game between J. R. Smith (Elmwood) and Kettle, will be played on the St. Albans green on Friday afternoon.
