Shipping: The Kakapo is due from Auckland on Thursday to load coal for Mew Plymouth and Auckland. The Titoki is due from Wanganui to-day to load coal for Tarakohe The Wingatui is expected from Wellington on Friday, with general cargo, and loads coal for return to Wellington. The Kaitoa is expected from Melson on Monday to load coal for Picton, returning about the 28th. inst., to load coal for Nelson. The Nikau is due from Wanganui on Friday to load coal for Nelson, and returns about Monday to again load for Nelson. The Te Aroha is expected to sail from Wellington to-night with cargo for Westport and Karamea. Personal: Mr. John Dowgray, of Granity left for Wellington to-day to attend the final meeting of this year of the directorate of the Bank of New Zealand. Mr. J'oe Easton, of Granity, left this morning for Christciiurch, accompanied by his mother, Mrs. M. Easton, and Mrs. M. Oldham. Mrs. Easton will enter the Christchurch Hospital for treatment. Major McCormack Area Staff Officer, Nelson is paying a visit to Westport. Captain Parkes, O.C. 17h. National Reserve, left yesterday afternoon on a visit to Greymouth. Constable S. W. Mcßurney, of Denniston, has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant and is to be transferred to Wellington. The death took place in the O’Conor Home on Monday morning of Mrs. Mary Bradley, at the age of 84 years. Deceased was a native of Galway, Ireland, and arrived in New Zealand 69 years ago, and resided in Canterbury and Blenheim prior to coming to Westport. She was an inmate of the Home for the past 12 years. Her husband died 13 years ago. Paddy’s Market: A Paddy’s Market held by the Sergeant’s Hill School, raised £l4 Is 3d, and a raffle £5. Miss C. Woodhead, who organised the gathering, was tendered a presentation. Gorse Blaze: The Fire Brigade was called to an outbreak in a vacant section at the upper end of Palmerston Street yesterday afternoon. When it was discovered, a quantity of gorse which had been recently cut was in flames, A lead of hose soon had the blaze under control. Teaching Appointments: The Nelson Education Board has made the following appointments tor 1941 of studentst completing the Training College course in 1940: — Probationary Assistants appointed to schools in Buller —Denniston: Ricnard Stead; Granity: Alexander McIntyre; Reef ton: lan McEwin; Westport: Mary Forsyth and John Banks. Extra probationary assistants—Granity: William Rennie; Millerton: James Orman; Murchison: Nancy James; Westport: Frank Goldsmith and Molly Mullan. The Misses Fields and Rasmussen, have been selected to take third year specialists’ courses. Tiroroa Home Guard; More than 50 attended a very successful inaugural meeting of the Home Guard at Tiroroa last night. The District P.W.D. Engineer, Mr. R. R. Dawber, who called the meeting because of a request from the P.W.D. head office to secure as many P.W.D. enrolments in the Home Guard as possible, was in the qhair. Mr. Dawber, Flight Lieutenant Hamilton, Area Commander, and the County Chairman, Mr. D. J. D. Archer, addressed the meeting on various aspects of the Guard and its training. Flight Lieutenant Hamilton answered questions pertaining to the • military training of the Guard, and is to be commended on the clarity with which he explained the various details. Almost every available man present was enrolled at the end of the meeting.
