KUMARA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] The first parade of the newlyformed Home Guard took place on Sunday afternoon last, when mere was a good muster of over sixty men. The State and Convent schools close on Thursday for thp Xmas and New Year vacation. The carriage of mails, parcels and goods between Kumara and Kumara railway will in future be carried out by Mr Spiers’ motor service. The two local bakery businesses have been merged into one. In future the business will be carried on by Mr R. N. May. Another successful euchre and danc e in aid of the Patriotic Fund was held in th e Memorial Hail. The December meeting of the School Committee was held on Monday evening; present, Messrs D. A. McLean (chairman), R. Chant. rL J. Little, J. Reedy and H. Hamer 'hou. secretary). The headmaster,. Mr E. J. Thwaites, was also present. The Canterbury Education Board wrote re the grading of the school. It was resolved to procure a long-handled mon to clean the walls during th e Xmas vacation, and suitable casters for the school piano.
