HOKITIKA, December 6.

Owing to the absence of the Magistrate Mr G. G. Chisholm from the district, the charges against Henry James Levett, of Harihari, in connection with the Jehovah Witness organisation, were to-day adjourned, and will now be heard at the ordinary sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Hokitika on Wednesday next.

Mr Young, of Dunedin, has arrived and taken up his duties as successor to Mr E. B. Murray, as District Land Registrar at Hokitika. The primary schools close for the Christmas holidays on Thursday, 19th inst., remaining closed 'for nearly seven weeks, until February 4th. A branch of the Home Guard at Ruatapu will be formed on Tuesday evening next, at a meeting at the local hall.

.At the Westland Licensing Committee meeting to-day, there were present Messrs F. W. McGregor (chair), T. R. Chesterman J. Kyle, and J. B. Kent. The application for renewal of the accommodation license by John Morresey in respect of the Wataroa Hotel was granted, repairs having been carried out. The renewal of the publican’s license for the Union Hotel, Greymouth (George Robert Stribling, licensee) was granted, an additional bathroom required having been installed. The following transfers were granted: Paroa Hotel, Elizabeth Burger to John Edward Kennedy; Clydesdale Hotel, Ross, Frederick James Poole to Robert Wm. Parker; Terminus Hotel, Otira. Daniel G. O’Connor to Thomas Grenall Lewis. ,

Local tennis teams to play Greymouth at Hokitika to-morrow are:— Sherman, Roberts, Hoffman, Gilligan (holders); Pedder, James, Fraser, Stevenson; J. Schroeder, Stuart, Conning, Bain; Henham, Cooke, Watson, King; C. Schroder, Hogg, Spiers, McLaughlin; Ballinger, Houston, Lakin, Fleming; Olsen, Patchett, Fredric, Havill.
