DENNISTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] Farewell: On Saturday evening a large number attended a farewell ceremony to Mr. and Mrs. W. McDonald, who are relinquishing caretaking duties at the “Club.” The popular couple have carried out their duties in an excellent manner for many years and they will be sadly missed. During a delightful supper given by the ladies of the Club, Mr. W. Cooper, President of the Club, thanked Mr. and Mrs. McDonald for past services, and, as a token of appreciation for services rendered, presented them with a well filled wallet and a duchess set. Both responded, thanking all for the delightful presents. Mr. J. B. Hudson, the veteran of the Club, was the recipient of a fountain pen from the members, who greatly appreciate the fine work he has put into the welfare of the Club for the last 48 years. Mr. T. Lawson made the presentation, as one of the Trustees. Mr. Hudson suitably replied, saying that, when he has successfully concluded 50 years as Secretary of the Club, he will resign his position in favour of a younger member. A number of toasts were given during the evening, as follows: —“The Visitors,” proposed by Mr. G. Johnston, replied to by Mr. T. Dellawayj “The Ladies,” proposed by Mr. G'. T. Lawson; “The Guests of the Evening,” proposed by Mr. W. Cooper, replied to by Mr. and Mrs. McDonald; “The Veteran Secretary, Mr. J. B. Hudson,” proposed by Mr. Cooper and Mr. Hudson suitably replied. Mr. J. Adamson presided at the piano while Mr. J'ack Kay conducted the various community sings. A wealth of talent was discovered as the evening proceeded, those helping to make it a, big success being: Master D. Jack, songs, “South of the Border.” “Silent Night.” and “Mystery of Life”; Mrs. Glendinning, songs, “In the Gloaming,” and “Love Is All”; Mr. J. Kay, songs, “Mother McCree,” “Maggie,” and “Mexicali Rose”; Mr. G. Cumming, “In the Little Shirt My Mother Macle For Me,” and “Dixy Highway”; Masters Cockburn and R. Allott, duet, “South of the Border”; Masters R. Allot and J. Muir, duet, f'Ranch and IMy Cattl|e7; Mr. P. O’Shea, songs, “A Scotsman’s Wedding anfl Memories”; Mr. G. McLaughlin. songs, “Garden of Roses” and “Haile Caledonia”; Mrs. R. Anderson, songs “Ever of Thee,” “One Night ’of Love,” and “Silver Threads Among the Gold”; Mr. J’. Muir, song, “The Red Rose”; Dr. Harkness, song, ‘’The One Rose”; Mrs. Gilmour, song, “Danny Boy”; Mr. A. Clarke, song, “Mary of Argyle”; J. Kay and T. Dellaway, “Someone Like You”; Mr. Les Ward, songs, “Scatterbrain” and “Lights of London”; Mr. R. Warne, song “I’ll Pray for You”; Mr. Glendinning/ poem, “If”; Mr. T. McLaughlin, humorous recitation. Mr. T. Lawson, a- trustee of the Club, thanked all who had come along to the social room to make the evening the success it was. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” ended a splendid evening. Social:

The Returned Soldiers’ Association held a social evening in the Mission Hall, Burnett’s Face, on Friday evening, when the members’ wives and families were entertained. Mr. J'. McKearnan had charge of the floor and a most enjoyable evening was spent by all. Music for the dances was supplied by Mr. P. Cole (piano) and Mr. T. Glendinning (piano accordeon). Dances were also arranged for the children. Items during the evening were rendered by the following:—Mr. G. McLaughlin, song; Mrs. H. McLeod, song; Mr. A. S'haw. song; Miss B. Allan, song; and Miss S. Chapman, song. Community singing was very popular, being led by Mr. JJ. McKearnan, P. Cole and T. Glendinning. Novelty dances were won as follows:—Spot Waltz (kiddies) won by Syd and Betty Kelly; Statue Boomps a Daisy (kiddies), won by Miss McKearnan and Joe Kelly; Monte Carlo Waltz (kiddies), won by R. McLeod and M. Kerr; Monte Carlo Waltz (adults), by Mr. S. Chapman and Mrs. S. Kelly; Lucky Spot Dance, by P. O’Keefe and Miss M. Kerr. Lucky seats were won by Mrs. Russell and Mr. T. Henderson, Mr. McKearnan and J. Allan. A laughing competition was won by Mr. J. Dickinson and Mrs. H. McLeod. A plentiful supper was served by the Burnett’s Face ladies’ committee while at intervals ice creams were served to all. Prior to concluding each child was served with a bag of lollies and an apple, after which Mr. J'. Kelly called for three hearty cheers for the Ladiesf Committee, the evening thereafter neing terminated with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” i. Hfi!
